death

I was taught that when someone dies, the living should respectfully mourn that person. We don't have to have liked him or her in their lifetime but they deserve a certain amount of respect in death. (i'm not saying shed a bucket of tears, but if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all)

While driving back from canberra with the radio on, we heard that there were reports of Osama bin laden's death. The announcer went on to report that people were already sending in memorials. He then went on to announce that members of a band had sent in a memorial to bin laden's death and he was going to play it. The "memorial" was a tape of band members laughing hardily.

I was appauled. not that i ever had any love for osama, but laughing at his death seems wrong. I do not ascribe to his beliefs or the way that he implemented them. I do believe that NO ONE should be laughed over in death. Life is hard, no matter where you live, no matter what you do for a living. At death, everyone is equally dead so do not laugh at what you are to become, it may come sooner than you wish.

pick a card

A weekend away! A drive to Canberra and a nice little hotel to stay in. Too bad there are e-tolls to pass through. Yet we have no idea how to purchase an e-toll without a credit card.

More and more often we are finding the need for a credit card. Those aweful things that are the bane of our existence and the frustration of so many! Yet life in our westerworld is hardly possible without it.

So which one to choose? do we get the credit card that offers no annual fee but charges your first born child in interest? or maybe the one that has the low annual fee of a mere house morgage with a low interest rate of the price of fuel for a year?

sigh....i hate money.

deep-fried thumb

Last night i deep-fried my thumb. While making tea, i used my hand to adjust a piece of bread that was sitting in hot oil. I should have realised that my depth perception was not great (it never is when its darker). I stuck my thumb in the hot oil, and being the daft that i am, i didn't realise i was burning it for a couple of seconds. Suddenly the pain reached my brain and i screamed and ran to the sink for some cold water.

Chris, the sweetheart that he is, ran to my aid! he grabbed ice out of the freezer and held it to my hand. I was very grateful but knew that if he didn't attend to tea, it would burn before i got better. i instructed him to flip the bread in the pan so that one side would not burn. He did so, but managed to step on a piece of stray glass and cut his foot badly. With blood dripping out of his foot he ran to the bathroom to search in vain for a band-aid. When he came back he found me still nursing my sore thumb. He found the piece of glass on the floor he had stepped on and picked it up to throw in the bin. Unfortunately, he cut himself again. This time not so badly.

After two hours of holding ice to my thumb, (and chris sitting quietly on the floor) i felt it was time to let blood flow return to my limb. I took my hand away from the ice and as the blood rushed back to my thumb i screamed in pain. (that really HURTS!)

After 5 minutes of me pacing around the house and generally bemoaning my state, chris insisted i take something for the pain. I finally agreed and took prescription strength vicodin. (for those who don't know, this is a SUPER drug in the fight against pain) Soon after i was seeing spots and telling Chris he "made me feel like blueberries". Neither one of us is sure what that means besides the obvious idea that I possible shouldn't deep fry my thumb.

dead or alive

news

if i was in a vegetative state, would you pull my plug? or keep me inprisoned in my own head?

what happened?

i read an artcle detailing how Tom Cruis' baby isn't likely to be any less photographed now that her picture has been released to the media. it got me thinking...why do we (the public) want pictures of our movie star' children?
Why was there almost no news coverage of the children of Audry Hepburn, Val Kilmer, or Madonna?

Could it be that we have gone past the mere desire to be entertained and now fancy ourselves to be part of the star's own family?

Why can't we be satified with our own lives and our own family's children? why is there a need to feed off the celebrities' images?

lots of questions...no answers.

In your face big media!

Arctic Monkeys blast media The Arctic Monkeys were determined to use the opportunity to make life difficult for the media after winning the Mercury Music Prize last night.

Despite being happy to accept the £20,000 (€29,400) industry prize for their 2005 debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, the cheeky rockers insist their resistance to the mainstream music business will remain as strong as ever - and that includes the press. The Mardy Bum stars garnered their own publicity using the online networking site MySpace, as well as handing out demos at their gigs - rocketing them to the top of the charts with debut single I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor before the media had even noticed them.

As a result, the Arctic Monkeys have relished ridiculing journalists ever since. When asked why the band are so reluctant to be interviewed, one member of the band quipped Alex Turner replied: "We're doing a social experiment to see if we needed the media or not. Turns out we didn't."After a female reporter asked a similar question to one which had already been asked by another journalist, the rocker blasted: "You're rubbish. Pay attention. This is why we hate doing interviews."

New car smell

On 5 September Chris and I welcomed the newest member of our family home! While we still have not decided on a name, we're certain to find one soon. Our newest little bundle of joy is our Ford Festiva. Its hunter green and VERY small. (hurray for very small, fuel effecient cars!)

So back to the name thing....we were thinking of calling it The Avocado. But chris felt that with his previous car and Melody's car all being named after vegetables, it was time for something new.

I don't quite agree so i'm thinking we need some outside input. Here are some of the ideas we've got thus far....

Falic symbol (chris wanted something that showed we had a sexy car...)
C-squared (this comes from e=mc squared)
The avocado
Guava
kiki

so put your votes in...we gladly accept any new ideas!

I got tagged!

1. What do you like most about where you live?

Well it isn't the early morning "moooo" call from our four-legged neighbours! I think what i like best about where i'm living now is that i'm close to my friends at college.

2. Is there anything strange about where you live?

Besides the four-legged neighbours and the uninvited black, winged guests that continually pester the flyscreen...nope.

3. What's one of your all-time favourite music albums, and why?

Hmmm....there are so many great ones...but the one i have yet to get bored with is "songs about jane" by maroon 5. I'm not sure why i like it so much...but i do!

4. Did you have a passion for something as a kid that you still have now? (If not - what is one of your passions now?)

As a kid i don't think there was much that i was introduced to that i wasn't passionate about (lets face it i was a very excitable kid) What i am still passionate about though is probably acting, theatre, performance. I love the idea of replaying and idea over and over in ways that connect with different people. Yes, i know its weird...

5. What do you like most about having a blog?

I like being able to put down my thoughts online for anyone to read and get feedback. I love it when people tell me i'm on the right track....don't like knowing that i've gone off the deepend, but i suppose i need to know that too!

Pick 3 (or more) people and give them the opportunity to be famous in their own lunchtimes! :)I'm tagging Lindsey and Sharona and Jen

CNN Anchor Takes Bathroom Humor to 'Letterman'

CNN anchor Kyra Phillips, whose voice was inadvertently broadcast from a CNN bathroom as she chatted with a friend during a speech by President Bush this week, turned up on David Letterman's show Thursday night, where she read a top-10 list of excuses for what occurred. Among them: "10. Still haven't mastered complicated on/'off switch; ... 5. I was set up by those bastards at Fox News; ... 4. Like you've never gone to the bathroom and had it broadcast on national television; 1. You have to admit, it made the speech a lot more interesting."

Dear Apple

Dear Apple

I am a planning to be in the market for a new ibook in the next year or two. I had planned to purchase a mac because i have loved how effective it is in handling photographic images as well as film. Its ease of use has also encouraged me to purchace this computer. However i have recently come accross an article that has turned me away from purchacing your products.

I am unashamedly a greeny. I love the beautiful landscape, the way the air smells in the blue mountains. Anything to damage this is not worth my support.I will use a computer i don't like as much, if it means i cause less harm to the enviroment.

I am writing to you in hopes that your enviormental practices will change in the next several months so that when i am ready to buy my new computer, i can come to you in assurance that my purchase is being made without the sacrifice of my enviorment.

Yours truely

goodbye

Melody, sharona and i were the first people to stay in our apartment at hornsby. It was a perfect little flat with beautifully big windows and large rooms.

It was a sad fairwell on sunday when we had to move out. We still don't know where we will be perminately established but we are trusting that God will open up our prefect house:)

paranoid?

My grandparents were alive when McCarthy was at his peak. His paranoia of evil communists caused ripples through an entire country. People lost their jobs, people were killed, people were sent to prison...a lot of them primarily due to a paranoid fear.

I am living in an age of terrorist paranoia. With people being accused of terrorist plots, torture on the rise, and tighten security I wonder where this will lead. I suppose that it is only a matter of time before curfews and phone tapping become a major part of our lives.

Am I just being paranoid? Or is this patriotism? I can sometimes get confused.

Natascha

I am amazed by this story. Why would a man take a 10 year old girl and hold her captive for 8 years? This might sound strange but, if he's pedophilic than wouldn't he have lost interest as she developed into a woman? Why did he choose this girl?

I am in awe of the girl, now woman, herself. What amazing strength she must have to be able to handle imprisonment of that kind for so long and then to escape!

There are so many questions but now is not the time for answers. Now is the time for healing. So I will stay my questions and continue in rejoicing that Natascha is home again.

Sicky

For the last week I've been suffering from a severe sore throat. But going to the doctor is not something I take lightly. I sat stubernly on the couch, unable to swallow my own saliva, but instant that I was "getting better". Finally after several days of Chris pleading. I finally went to the doctor.

She was a very kind European woman who very gentle explained to me that I had strep throat. (oh the joy!) if you've never had it, I'll gladly explain the joy of it. First you get a bad sore throat. Then you start to notice that you've got large bumps in your throat. Then you notice that some of those bumps have white patches on them. The white patches are puss. The longer it takes to get to a doctor the bigger the bumps become until its hard to swallow anything (example, my own saliva)

But the good part is that once you have been diagnosed you can get on antibiotics. And you start feeling better within 24 hours.

I'm not quite at 24 hours yet...but I'm starting to cheer up again;)

Dr. Buddha

Yesterday i was walking through Morisset and i came accross a shop i had never seen before. I nearly died laughing as i read the name of the shop.

Dr. Buddha's G Spot

Inside the shop was full of tibetian style clothing. Incence was burning in multiple corners of the room and i was almost knocked out before i made it past the "Welcome" sign.

As i walked into the shop i was greated, not by the usual shop bell, but by a man in the back saying "FUCK I NEED MORE CUSTOMERS!" I didn't see anyone about and almost ran for the door but a pretty blue and purple top caught my eye and i decided to have a quick look and then duck out before the cursing man came into the store front.

I looked at the top and realised it was far too small for me to wear in public but thought i might enjoy adding it to the collection of thing not to wear in public. I had just picked it up and turned it over when the shop keeper burst through the back door and stoped. He asked if i needed any help. He was wearing what looked like girl's pants and a old aussie t-shirt. His dreds were hanging down his back. He looked about 40.

"um, no. I'm 'right. thanks" i said.

"well, if i can help you with anything, just let me know. We order all our stock ourselves. There is no middle man and thus all our things are unique." he replied in very polite and pleasant sort of way. He had the kind of voice you expect really kind people to have. The kind of voice that instantly makes you want to trust them and hand all your money over to them. I liked him immidiately.

Visa

Well I've finally got news on my visa. After weeks and weeks of waiting, my immigration agent finally found out the status of my visa from my case officer. He had rung on Friday only to find she had the day off. He rang this morning and found out the big news...."She can't find my case file at the moment but she'll definitely get back to my agent by the end of the week."

so yet another week of waiting...Another week of wondering...

until next time...Keep your citizenship

Open Letter from John Cleese.

A Message from John Cleese to the citizens of the United States of America:In light of your failure to elect a competent President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (excepting Kansas, which she does not fancy).
Your new prime minister, Tony Blair, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect: You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.

1. Then look up "aluminium," and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as "favour" and "neighbour." Likewise, you will learn to spell "doughnut" without skipping half the letters, and the suffix - ize will be replaced by the suffix - ise. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptble levels. (look up "vocabulary").

3. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as US English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter "u" and the elimination of - ize. You will relearn your original national anthem, God Save The Queen.

4. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

5. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're certainly not grown up enough to handle a gun.

6. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

7. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean.

8. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

9. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline") - roughly $6/US gallon. Get used to it.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

11. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

12. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie MacDowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

13. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

14. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game, which is not played outside of America. Since only 21% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable.

15. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

16. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

17. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 PM with proper cups, never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; strawberries in season.

Thank you for your co-operation.

John Cleese.

Movie wonder

I love the 1980's film Real Genuis. I love the idea even in a school of social misfits there were lesser social misfits, one of whom was Val Kilmer. Can you imagine Val as a misfit? I can't. Too much of a social life for that...

While the film posted this hot new star, he was not the only star of the film. Gabriel Jarret, Michelle Meyrink, and William Atherton also boasted top credits. But what happened to these people?

Another film I like was Undercover Blues. Its top billers are still well known, but the film itself never made it to the "world's Best Comedy EVER" category. Why? Do I have a strange since of humour?

What is it about stardom that sometimes works and sometime fails? Is there a formula for success or is success merely a figment of imagination?

I suppose "normal" life of us mere mortals is less complicated...But not by much. We still have success and failure. We still find some people unforgettable and others just slip away through the memory. The main difference is our slip-ups and memory loss' don't cost us $7.5 million.

There You are

I was hoping you would write to me a message in the stars
As if the stars themselves were not enough
And I awaited your arrival here from some place very far
As if I couldn't feel your constant touch

There you are - loving me like crazy
There you are - though I am unaware
There you are - when my heart is doubting
Even there you are

I was waiting for a miracle and hoping for a sign
As if each breath I take is not a gift
And I was acting just as if the way you gave your life for mine
Didn't have my foolish heart convinced

There you are - loving me like crazy
There you are - though I am unaware
There you are - when my heart is doubting
Even there you are

I was hoping you would write to me a message in the stars
As if the stars themselves were not enough

New Life

So its been a month since i last posted. I can't really say that i'm sorry. I've been busy. You see, last Sunday, my life changed completely. I became Mrs. Thiele. The name still sounds strange to my own ears. I wonder if i'll ever get used to it.

For one whole week i've tried to wrap my head around this idea that i am no longer responsible for only myself. I now have a husband to think about. When i make holiday arrangments, i must now take into consideration my husbands schedule. A month ago i would have done it out of courtesy. Today it is required of me. It feels differnt.

Along with many more freedoms, many more responsibilities are being bestowed on us. Medical insurrance is no longer a luxury, it is a neccessity.

Yes, being married is something i am still getting used to. I don't have all the right words, right actions, but i'm loving my practice. I don't expect to ever get it "right". I only expect to grow closer to this wonderful man i married.

Controversy

So I just finished Dan Brown's book, The Da Vinci Code. I know I'm only 2-3 years behind the rest of the world, but please bear with me.

After so much drama about the book, movie, and court case, I figured that the contents of the book must be extremely well written and obscenely convincing. So I must admit that I kind of decided I didn't want to read something that would shake my faith up too much....(that is why the delay in reading) Then I decided that my faith wasn't worth having if I avoided things that challenged it. So I read the book...and was completely disappointed.

The book was a cheap paperback thriller. It started out as a great idea but the actual plot had holes that you could drive a truck through.

Churches around the world have been up-in-arms about the religious implications of this book. I really don't understand why they gave it the time of day. Most student of history could see the faults in the "facts" and logic jumps. The churches' outrage only added to the credibility of the falsehoods.

I think I was hoping for something that was really going to force me to reconsider my faith...Instead it caused me roll my eyes in annoyance.

truth

"and the truth will set you free"

It is interesting how scared we humans seem to be of truth. For all our puffed up ego-centric ideologies, we really don't like to see the truth fully. The idea of looking at ourselves and being honest with what we see scares us silly.

I recently read an article that suggested that the SDA church had some areas of improvement to make. I was amazed at the backlash. The article was not attacking the church but merely showing areas that had proven to be weak. People were quick to be critical saying that "we shouldn't be critical of the church". why not?

Is the truth in our midst too much?
"I am the truth" (John 14:6)

Perhaps with the right spin on the truth we could handle it better. But is the truth still the truth after it is spun?

To the director of Xmen 3, Brett Ratner

Dear Mr. Ratner

I saw your film, X-men: The Last Stand several weeks ago. While I was most tempted to write this letter to you immediately I felt that a "cooling off" period was needed before I commented to you about your film. After almost 4 weeks I feel the cooling off period is over and I can say with full surety that your film was terrible.

I know that many people will criticize your deviation from the comic books, but I feel that the movies have been a separate entity. Thus, I feel that in the films all movement away from the comic books are not necessarily a bad thing. However, moving away from the story set up in x-men 1 & 2 is a mistake. You moved so far away from the characters and story we all fell in love with that you caused many of us fans to cry out in anguish. It was only through an act of God that rabid fans with pitchforks as claws didn't attack you!

Lets start with plot. Do you know that the difference between 'plot' and 'action' is? Because as far as I can tell, all the parts that needed plot you added action instead. So maybe your just confused. In order to help, I'll send you a dictionary to help clarify the difference.

Secondly, do you know that character can develop in a story??

Cinematicly, you've changed the style of the film from the first two. At first I was very angry that you changed the film style of x-men. (this is where the cooling off period paid off) After thinking about it though, every director should be allowed their own style of film, even if it is part of a series.

Lastly, gore does not make a good film! Your good at action, but please consider us people who actually WANT MORE! More story LESS gore!

Thank you for your consideration in this most earth-shattering problem.
K-Marie

Imitate

Today I saw a homeless man on the street. He was curled up and sleeping. He looked cold. I imagined myself as him, lying on cold cement in the cold winter air. I shivered.

“I would want a long coat to keep me warm,” I thought to myself.

I walked into a nearby second-hand shop to see if there were any long coats that might fit this man. I expected to pay $15 dollars, maybe $20 if it were a particularly nice coat. Being winter, many of the coats were already gone, but there was one long black wool coat that looked like this man’s size. I checked the price tag, $40. It was double what I had wanted to pay. I looked around for another coat, maybe one that was shorter. I found one. It was thin and badly worn. It was $12.

“I can afford $12” I thought. I picked up the coat and took one step towards the cashier.

“If you were cold, would this keep you warm?” I could almost hear God ask me.

“No, but it’s better than nothing.” I replied.

The voice was quiet, but reproachful.

“Fine,” I said, “I’ll get the expensive coat.” I picked up the long wool jacket and walked to the cashier. As I placed my money on the counter, I wondered if the homeless man would still be there when I went back. I wondered what I would do with this coat if he had gone.

“God,” I whispered quietly, “You better know what you’re doing.”

“This coat looks nice and warm,” the cashier smiled sweetly.

“It will be keeping someone very warm this winter” I replied not really knowing who the ‘someone’ was going to be.

I took the coat outside and found the man still sleeping quietly on the street. He had a warm cup of coffee in front of him. I leaned over him placing the coat over his sleeping body, like a mother would place a blanket over her child. I startled him quiet badly. He woke up with a jerk, spilling his cup of coffee on the road. He ignored the coat completely. He mumbled something that sounded aggressive but incoherent. He smelt horrid, like old sweat and dirt. His fingernails were long and dark from lack of grooming.

“I just wanted to leave this coat with you,” I said trying to calm him. He mumbled something about his wife leaving him but refused to look at me or the coat that lay discarded next to him.

“Are you okay?” I asked trying to get him to talk to me. He didn’t. He looked straight ahead, occasionally saying something I couldn’t make out. Finally, as he sat drinking his coffee, I just stood up and walked away.

When you do something special for someone it’s supposed to feel good. You’re supposed to feel like you’ve done something right. As I walked away from the man I felt hollow. I hadn’t done a good deed, I’d caused a homeless man to spill a precious cup of coffee and I didn’t even offer to replace it. I was repulsed by his smell and appearance. My ‘good deed of the day’ was painfully empty of the compassion it should have held. As an imitator of Christ I had failed and my failure shamed me, leaving me empty.

Christ was amazing. After spending 30-some years with us in our dirty, smelly world, He chose to give us a pricey gift. This gift would clothe us forever and give us a home to belong to. This gift would literally be our salvation. But we didn’t even say “thank you”. We were ungrateful.

I want to be like Jesus. My meager imitation is painful and embarrassing even in the best of times yet I continue to try. Why? Because Jesus asked me to treat the people like I would treat Him. While I may not do a great job, I can only get better with practice!

“Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of these least of these My brethren, you did it to Me,” Matthew 25:40

Sanctity of Marriage in the USA

As found on "myspace"

Ronald Reagan - divorced the mother of two of his children to marry Nancy
Reagan, who bore him a daughter only 7 months after the marriage. That means he
cheated and got someone else pregnant, kids!

Bob Dole - divorced the mother of his child, who had nursed him through the
long recovery from his war wounds.

Newt Gingrich - divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.

Dick Armey - House Majority Leader - divorced

Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas - divorced

Gov. John Engler of Michigan - divorced

Gov. Pete Wilson of California - divorced

George Will - divorcedSen. Lauch Faircloth - divorced

Rush Limbaugh - Rush and his current wife Marta have six marriages and four
divorces between them.

Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia - Barr, not yet 50 years old, has been married
three times. Barr had the audacity to author and push the "Defense of Marriage
Act." The current joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill is "Bob Barr...WHICH
marriage are you defending?!?

Sen. Alfonse D'Amato of New York - divorced

Sen. John Warner of Virginia - divorced (once married to Liz Taylor.)

Gov. George Allen of Virginia - divorced

Henry Kissinger - divorced

Rep. Helen Chenoweth of Idaho - divorced

Sen. John McCain of Arizonia - divorced

Rep. John Kasich of Ohio - divorced

Rep. Susan Molinari of New York - Republican National Convention Keynote
Speaker - divorced

So ... homosexuals are going to destroy the institution of marriage? Wait a
minute, it seems the Christian Heterosexual Republicans are doing a fine job
without anyone's help!

a penny for your thoughts

It is near the middle of winter. Its cold, raining, and overcast. I was having a polite conversation with a friend, we were disussing the seasons.

"What is your favourite season?" i asked.

"Summer" She replied, " but this one will do for now"

Jakarta

Jakarta before and after the earthquake
How unlucky is Jakarta?

If those people hadn't suffered enough with the tsunami a year and a half ago, they get hit by a big earthquake this year. The earthquake sets off volcanos and they threaten to start spewing!

My heart breaks for the people. They still suffering from being displaced not long ago, now they must start again.

I read about a man who survived the earthquake when a book case fell on him which shielded him from the rest of the falling rubble. He called out to his wife of thirty-some years for help, only to find her already dead.

My heart breaks for these people...how can i help? what do i have to offer? i'm afraid i have nothing but my prayers and i will give all i can of those until something more substantial can be arranged.

Shakespeare

To be or not to be?
that is the question.
whether it is nobler in the mind
(is "nobler" a word??)
to suffer the slings and arrows of outrages fortune
or to take arms against a sea of troubles
(without that useful noun/adjective/? We might believe it were a sea of fish)
and by opposing,
end them.
(I've won't finish the speech...I'll end the suffering here)

the gallery

I looked at all the photos in the gallery. I read the brief discriptions of the pictures. The photos ranged from art house to disturbingly, graphically violent. I saw a girl of two, covered in the blood of her parents after they failed to stop at a guard crossing and were shot dead. I saw pictures of gang retaliation and death. I saw pictures of starvation and struggle.

When the emotion of it all began to overwhelm me i sat down on a nearby sofa and wondered about human stupidity. For how long have we fought eachother? how long has both sides felt pain and loss? haven't we learned that when we war against eachother, we're only killing ourselves?

i suppose each generation hopes that it will be different when they reach the appropriate age to take over....but it never seems to get better...

I was reminded by a friend that only Christ brings peace, our ways never will.

More news

Well my phone was stolen. I suppose it was partly my fault. i thought it was in my pocket, but it had fallen out. when i went back for it, it was gone. All my phone numbers, messages, and notes that i had saved on my phone are gone. I'm very frustrated.

More news....

i posted a pic of the outside of the church were we will be getting married. it is on the wedding blog.

I suppose that last bit is the silver lining to a horribly depressing week.

Advice for men....or lesbians

The Hormone Hostage knows that there are days in the month when all a man has to do is open his mouth and he takes his very life into his own hands! Here are possible questions he could ask, arranged from dangerous to ultra safe:

DANGEROUS - What's for dinner?
SAFER -- Can I help you with dinner?
SAFEST -- Where would you like to go for dinner?
ULTRA SAFE -- Here, have some chocolate.

DANGEROUS -- Are you wearing that?
SAFER -- Gee, you look good in brown..
SAFEST -- WOW! Look at you!
ULTRA SAFE -- Here, have some chocolate.

DANGEROUS -- What are you so worked up about?
SAFER -- Could we be overreacting?
SAFEST -- Here's fifty dollars.
ULTRA SAFE -- Here, have some chocolate.

DANGEROUS -- Should you be eating that?
SAFER -- You know, there are a lot of apples left.
SAFEST -- Can I get you a glass of wine with that?
ULTRA SAFE -- Here, have some chocolate.

DANGEROUS -- What did you do all day?
SAFER -- I hope you didn't overdo it today.
SAFEST -- I've always loved you in that robe!
ULTRA SAFE -- Here, have some more chocolate

a week of quiet

Yesterday Melody left me. We didn't fight. There were not harsh words. She just, hugged me and left.

She didn't come back today.

I don't know what i'm going to do. I'm distraught without her. The apartment is quiet, almost eery. I walked into her room this morning. Her bed was made neatly....i made it that way after she left. i miss her.
.
.
.
.
.
She sent me a message today.

She says she's surrounded by men. I suppose this means she doesn't need me anymore. (sigh)
what could i offer that men in suits don't have?...nothing

Today, i'll go back to the apartment. I'll smell the carpet cleaner in the hall. I'll watch a movie. I'll sigh deeply....Then i'll invite my boyfriend over;)

why now?

I don't deny that God plays a bigger part in my life than i like to acknowledge. I somehow like believing that all my big feats are done out of my own power. The truth is much more somber. The truth is that i've done nothing but whine about how hard the journey is. I'm happy enough to take the credit when it comes to it, even though i've done nothing but drag my feet the whole journey!

How did i manage to get to this spot in my life? Simply by God's grace. How will i move forward....probably kicking and screaming.

i'm back

I have finally reached my destination. After a mere three days in transit, i arrived in australia. As is usual my personality, i hit the ground running.

After nearly a week of searching we've found a place we want to get married in. It is a small (key word small) church near Wahroonga. Its beautiful. A perfect place for the wedding. Now we just have to get the church board to agree to let us use the church. (Its a Uniting Church instead of a Seventh-day Adventist Church)

Hopefully in the next couple of days i'll know for sure.

FYI

This is just a quick note to let you know i'll be traveling from Seattle to Sydney during the next several days. So posts from me will be scarce for a while. If you miss me a lot, go to the wedding blog and read the super long story about why God made strawberries. by the time you finish reading it...well, i'll problably still be traveling, but i'm sure you'll feel better about strawberries.

The Simpsons Movie

I've only been a fan for about 3 years and i know the show has been running for many years longer than that. Still, i can't help but feel a bit excited at the prospect of a MOVIE. Will it be just as good as the TV episodes? Will it still use social commentary to poke fun at societies faults? I know the answer to neither of these questions. I suppose i'll just have to wait for 2007 to find out.

My trip

Have you ever wondered about the oddness of your family? These last few days I was reminded with full force of the strange lineage from which I come.

My mother's side of the family had a family reunion. The strangeness began when we picked up my aunt.

My mother and her are 15 years apart (my aunt being the senior of the two). My Aunt Diane heckles my mother to get her to do what she wants. "turn here....no you've turned the wrong way. Go back!" It was like watching an I Love Lucy episode. Very funny.

Then we got to my Uncle Allen...I mean, Joseph's house. (he grew up being called Allen, his middle name, until he married his second wife a few years ago and then started going by his first name, Joseph) Trying to remember to call him, "uncle Joseph" was ridiculously difficult. Finally I realised he would need a nickname if I were ever to call him 'Joseph'. I finally settled on "SIR JOSEPH". Once I settle on that, it was easy.

I have not seen any of my cousins for years. The last time I saw them was easily over 10 years ago. Some of us have tried to keep in contact, but its hard. On this trip, I spoke with all of them. It was fabulous.

Jonathan was out of the army and looking for residency overseas (he and I are kindred spirits that way).

Chad had gotten married and had a child. Cari was getting ready to jetset off to India. She travels to a different country almost monthly it seems. Matthew is doing great with school. We celebrated his birthday and his eyes lit up when we told him we had presents!

Jim is happy in his law enforcement job. He is very proud of his 5 foot 11 inch tall 8th grade son who is being recruited to train for basketball at the high school. Brian is doing pretty well. He brought his daughter, Jasmine, for me to get to know. He has spoken about her constantly but I'd never had a chance to meet her. I loved her almost instantly. Her and I are now "best friends".

My trip was fabulous. I had forgotten how much I missed my family. I had forgotten how crazy they all could be. I had forgotten to some extent, where I come from. It was good to get re-connected.

Taiwan

Today is the day for researching my tourist activities in Taipei Taiwan.

Due to a 16 hour lay-over there, i want to know the sorts of things i can go see!

So far i've already decided that a trip to the National Palace Museum is definately on the books. The shilin night market also looks interesting, although i'm not sure i'll be there late enough to catch it. I would also like to see some temples...but i'm not really sure if i'm allowed...

So help me out. what am i missing? Is there any place i should especially look into going while i'm there?

Prayer

A new study has found that prayer does not heal people who have just gone through heart surgery. There were three control groups. (Group A) One group of patients knew they were being prayed for. (Group B) One group who didn't know they were having prayer, and the last (Group C) did not receive prayer at all. The group that knew they were being prayed for had more complications from the surgery than those who either didn't know they were being prayed for or weren't prayed for at all. 52% of patients in groups B & C had heart complications. In group A, however, 59% of the patients had complications.

What are Christians taking away from this study? Some are saying that we can't use science to measure religion. Others are saying that we can't control God through prayer.

Outside the religious world, this idea of praying for the sick is being ridiculed as now "proven fact" that prayer doesn't work.

In a world based on "facts" I say there are too many coincidences for me to believe that miracles are accidents of nature. If prayer can not be quantified by science, I can still pray. After all, God is not a tame god that I can take out and play with. Neither is he a genie that gives be special favours when I pray, read my Bible, and pay tithe. My prayers, my spiritual walk, my God MUST be bigger than science or my prayers, my spiritual walk, my god are nothing more than trinkets.

This season

I have been told many times to trust the Lord with all my heart. It is so much easier to do when life seem fairly predicable.

It has been nearly 4 months sense i have last seen my passport. I know it is somewhere...i just don't know where...or at least i didn't until about three minutes ago. it turns out it was hiding in my computer bag all along.

The funny thing is, i'd emptied that bag at least three times looking for it. I'd dumped everything out of it. never once say it there before. to me, this just shows that God was waiting until the perfect time to give this to me. And i am truely grateful.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;a time to keep, and a time to cast
away;
a time to rend, and a time to sew;a time to keep silence, and a time
to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

Where does the giving stop?

Have u ever wondered what the world would be like if we literally would give our clothes off our backs for someone in need?

Some of you might comment on the amount of naked people walking around, but some of you might find that your values had been turned on its head.

James comments about us "Christians" saying to the needy, "be warm and well fed" but not actually doing anything to make this happen.

When I think about the people I know who give anything for the sake of those who need, I am constantly in awe. From the kind woman who fulfilled the needs of a bunch of college students to the man who fueled a revolution with his ideas of equality. These are the people who change the world. and I want to be like them.

V for Vendetta

Movies are mostly made to entertain the masses. They usually do a good job, especially big budget ones. However, rarely does a movie come along that appeals to the masses yet moves me to a point of a spiritual awakening. But I will not speak of this yet. Instead I will give you an example of some of the brilliance in the script.

Evey Hammond: Who are you?

V: "Who?" "Who" is but the form following the function of "what", and *what* I am is a man in a mask.

Evey Hammond: Well I can see that!

V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

Evey Hammond: [short pause] Oh... Right.

V: This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-Ã -vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

Guy Fawkes

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
gunpowder treason and plot.
I see no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent
to blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below,
Poor old England to overthrow:
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, make the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
Hip hip hoorah!
A penny loaf to feed the Pope.
A farthing o' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.
A faggot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar.
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head.
Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead.
Hip hip hoorah! Hip hip hoorah!"

The rhyme references 'Guy Fawkes night', November the 5th, when a Catholic plot to overthrow the english parliament was foiled.

bookish

I once had a fear that i would be considered "bookish" if i read too many books. This fear lasted maybe 10 minutes before i realised i didn't really care. I don't think i've ever given any amount of real consideration to other people liking me or not.

This is not to say that i don't care about having friends or socially polite behaviour. No, i'm just more likely to care that my friends are interested in me and not some sort of persona of someone they *might* like.

By now your sure i'm patting myself on the back for managing to be me myself for all these years. You may rest easy. This isn't the point.

As i attempt to fill out applications for visas, police reports, and other official documents i find myself putting that special "spin" on my character. I want to please these people. I want them to like me. I want them to give me a clean bill of character and let me pass through these proverbial doors of life!

In a sense i don't want to appear "bookish" to these authorities. i want to fit into the perfect peg. The i want to be the chearleader type that is popular and stays out of trouble!

But in the end, what is wrong with my "bookish" behaviour?

Dream a little dream

Thanks to Adele I had my first nightmare of the year. What was truly sad about it though was although I woke up in a fit of sweats, I found it more than a little amusing upon wakefulness.

In my dream my house was broken into by a thief carrying a shotgun the same proportion as Buggs Bunny would carry. Upon entering the house I figured she (the thief) would probably kill those who could identify her, so I calmly walk to the back of the house where my bro and mother are and say, "hey, there is a thief in front of the house. Don't come out of the room until she has left"

The thief then insists on us unloading our house into her convertible flash car. Knowing there isn't much room for a lot of stuff I tell my sister, "lets give her all the stuff we don't really need any more. She can't carry it all anyway!"

Strangely this work. and she drives away happy....

De-stress me

Stress is a factor that effects us all, almost constantly. I have always felt that I dealt with it relatively well. I freak out and then slowly deal with it.

Over the last few months there has been nothing to *do* in regards to my stress. This has left me in a constant state of "freaking out". This isn't great on the body. In fact it is downright havoc!

About a month ago I decided to start yoga. Not really believing it would do a lot for me but definitely wanting to try it out, I went to my first class. I've been addicted ever since. This gentle but complete workout has helped me to learn how to relax and release stress held by my body.

While I can't do fancy poses yet, I'm definitely enjoying this new found flexibility.

all hail the mighty fashion god

It is common knowledge that the main reason for watching or paying any attention what-so-ever to the Academy Awards anymore is for the fashion. Not that the movies nominated aren't good or intersteresting, but rather they lack the sort of public support that many other movies have recieved. Thus, this leaves the shallow sport of dress spotting.

Personally i think most of the dresses worn by celebrities lack any sort of personality. I love it when a person steps out onto the red carpet looking exactly like themselves...as freeky as that may be. This has led me to be a huge fan of Helen Bonham Carter. (click link to see what she wore to the 78th academy awards)

I think one of the reason i like her style so much is the fact it is always just a little bit "off". You are always left with the idea that if onely she had changed one or two things she would have been traditionally stunning.Take this next dress for example, there is nothing wrong with every one of the components, yet something just seems slightly amiss.

maybe its the shoes....

make me famous

Worth1000.com is having a contest.

If you are unfamilar with worth1000, it is a brilliant website. The website uses photoshop to make semi-realistic images.

The contest rules states:

In tonight's photoshop matchup we have an 8-Way contest featuring iolo123, paomigs, ayoksus, marinuse, IronJelly, hypnotode, Pineappleupsidedown and adamshur. They have chosen 'Amazing Escapes' as the theme for their match and the stakes are bragging rights only.

The rules for this contest are thus: depict someone or something (could be animal, human or alien) in the act of escaping from grave danger. Think of a really close shave where someone just manages to escape by the skin of their teeth. We want to see white knuckle fear with a sense of suspense, will they or won't they make it, that type of thing. As long as your image depicts the act of escape or avoidance in the face of some type of danger it will meet the rules. Be creative have fun. Usual cliches are to be avoided.

The players will have until 11:59 pm Worth time on Saturday, April 1st to submit their entries, followed by a voting period of 2 days.

Competitors are reminded to maintain anonymity during the contest.

Good luck!
what do you think, should i enter?

Size doesn't matter, does it?

Well, my little blog has reached over 200 posts and 5000 hits! I'm not sure if this is supposed to make me feel good or bad. How should I measure these things? Is 200 posts in three years a good average? Or maybe it is a sadly pathetic one...

How bout the hit count...should I have more hits than 5000? I don't know!

Kieran Culkin once said, "It's easy to cash out and make a lot of bad movies. I'd rather be dirt-poor on the streets and have done good films."

If I translate that over to my little blog, I should pay more attention to my content than my popularity or mass production. It is good advice that I will take close to heart.

my passport my passport, where-for-art thou my passport?

i seek it here,
i seek it there
my mother seeks it everywhere!
is it in hevean?
or is it in hell?
that damned elusive passport?

is it me? do passports just hate me? it seems that every chance they get they take a walkabout on me.

when i find it again, i'm inserting a homing beakon into its back cover!

in all seriousiness, will everyone pray for me to find it very quickly? i'm really sunk if i don't find it soon!

Pride

The Olympics have struck a cord with me. For the first time, I see how the Olympics can be more than puffed up two year olds challenging eachothers with "I can run faster than you!"

US speed skater, Joey Cheek, won gold on Monday night. He announced that he was going to donate this prize money to Darfur refugees. This shocked me but what shocked me more was his challenge to the sponsors of the Olympics to match his gift. The challenge itself didn't shock me, but to whom it was addressed did. So often I have seen people from the USA assume that if another person is doing what they are, they can afford the same things they can. It was nice to see the challenge was not put to other winners of the Olympics, but rather those who obviously have the money to donate.

Anyway, this is my congratulatory response to Joey Cheek, for winning the gold and making a stand for a country that every nation wants to forget exists!

Just for Chris

I found this cartoon and immediately thought of Chris. No offence Chris, I'm sure that your a good driver. But I remember the first thoughts I had when I began to "regularly" get behind the wheel of a car. I believe they went something like, "I can't really be old enough to be doing this!"

(in my case I probably wasn't. Being a mere child of 15)

Hope

Friedrich Nietzsche once said, "Hope is the worst of evils, for it prolongs the torments of man."

George Bernard Shaw said, "He who has never hoped can never despair".

Today I put off paying our immigration agent. Why? Because I'm hoping we won't need him. I"m hoping that a brilliant job will open up in front of me and I'll be whisked away into a life full of happy working days and pockets full of cash.

I fear that the truth will be much more stark. It will be a penniless existence, relying solely on the kindness of friends for survival for the continuing months.

My options are very few. None of them strike me as great.

If I stay in the USA I have the option of continuing work. I will continue to get free room and board, but I will continue to emotionally shrivel up.

If I go to Australia, I will have very little money to survive on, and no hope of getting work (because I'll be a tourist) but i will be able to emotionally breath again.

Dear God, what do I do? I trust that you have a path, but I have yet to find it. Maybe I am walking on it without knowing.

Whatever the case may be, I continue to trust and hope.

But in the end, isn't it always the same question and always the same answer?

A football is round, a game lasts 90 minutes. That's for sure. Anything else is merely hypothetical. Off we go!"

It was these opening lines that set the stage for the beautiful film, Lola Rennt. It is the story of a couple who must obtain 100,000 marks within 20 minutes. The story is told three times each when the one realised that the money or the life they are about to lead is not the one they want. Each time the money is thrown away in favour of their relationship.

For an action film, it just might have more meaning than meets the eye.

More than oops

I recently wrote an article that was based on my own experience. The problem was, "my own" experience drew heavily from someone else's life. The ethical thing to do would have been to contact this person and ask permission to use details of their life in my story. In my own selfishness, I decided not to. Not because I thought they would have denied me permission, but rather it would have taken time and I just couldn't be bothered. Besides, it was going to be published in a magazine that they would never see.

It came as quite a surprise then, when a few weeks later it was published in a DIFFERENT magazine that I was sure this person would come across. All my excuses suddenly fell short in the face of a long friendship that was now threatened.

After this person read the article they were shocked to find that several of the examples I gave did not fit with what they felt happened. Our memories and understanding of events were different. Not only was this embarrassing, I suspect it hurt them that I hadn't paid more attention to the details.

While this person has assured me that they have forgiven me, I am still plagued by guilt.

James says, "confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed". I guess in my posting this, I'm looking for healing. So it is here on my public site that I acknowledge my ethical laps. To the person whom I have betrayed, I am sorry. I am sorry that didn't take the time to check with you. I am sorry that you have now have reason to question my trust. I am sorry....

i spend less than an hour with him over the weekend but we bonded quite quickly. When it was time for me to leave, he ran to block the door and then tried to follow me out the door when i finaly snuck past.
