Arctic Monkeys blast media The Arctic Monkeys were determined to use the opportunity to make life difficult for the media after winning the Mercury Music Prize last night.
Despite being happy to accept the £20,000 (€29,400) industry prize for their 2005 debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, the cheeky rockers insist their resistance to the mainstream music business will remain as strong as ever - and that includes the press. The Mardy Bum stars garnered their own publicity using the online networking site MySpace, as well as handing out demos at their gigs - rocketing them to the top of the charts with debut single I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor before the media had even noticed them.
As a result, the Arctic Monkeys have relished ridiculing journalists ever since. When asked why the band are so reluctant to be interviewed, one member of the band quipped Alex Turner replied: "We're doing a social experiment to see if we needed the media or not. Turns out we didn't."After a female reporter asked a similar question to one which had already been asked by another journalist, the rocker blasted: "You're rubbish. Pay attention. This is why we hate doing interviews."
